Frequently asked questions

What to know before you book scaffolding or facade advertising: booking, prices, permits, print, campaign length and results, answered briefly.

Booking & prices

How do I book an advertising space with Hyde Media?

Choose a space under locations and enquire by email at theodor.staal@hydemedia.ch, by phone on +41 77 233 81 21 or through the contact form. You receive a quote that is valid for 30 days. The agreement is formed when we receive your written acceptance, or when we confirm your order with an order confirmation. Only then is the site reserved for you. Any objections to the order confirmation must be raised within 5 working days.

How much does scaffolding or facade advertising cost?

Prices are on request; there is no price list. The price depends on site, size, period and production. You receive a quote in Swiss francs, plus VAT, covering print, installation, removal and the permit application. Send enquiries to theodor.staal@hydemedia.ch or +41 77 233 81 21, or use the contact form. You can work out in advance how many contacts a campaign period delivers with the campaign calculator.

What is included in the price?

The price typically covers media rental, print production, installation, removal and permit fees. What is binding is what the quote or order confirmation lists. Services not listed are invoiced separately as agreed. If public charges, fees or permit conditions outside Hyde Media’s control change after the order confirmation, they may be passed on. You supply the creative as print-ready artwork, and we take care of the rest.

What are the payment terms?

Payment is due 30 days net from the invoice date. Unless the order confirmation says otherwise, the order is invoiced when the agreement is formed. For special production, such as non-standard formats or materials, Hyde Media may require payment for production before it starts. After the payment period, default interest of 5% per year applies. If an overdue payment has not arrived, the campaign may be postponed, and its period is not extended as a result. All conditions are in the terms.

Can media agencies book with Hyde Media?

Yes, media agencies can book on behalf of an advertiser. The agency and the advertiser are then jointly and severally liable for the agreement unless otherwise agreed in writing. Any agency commission or discount is agreed separately and applies to media rental only, not to production, installation and fees. The terms apply between businesses only, the agreement is governed by Swiss law, and the place of jurisdiction is Basel. More for brands.

Locations & formats

Which advertising formats does Hyde Media offer in Switzerland?

In Switzerland Hyde Media sells two large formats: scaffolding advertising and facade advertising. With scaffolding advertising, a printed banner hangs on the scaffolding of a building under renovation. With facade advertising, it hangs on a facade or blank end wall. We do not offer digital screens in Switzerland. Large banners like these are also called megaposters; scaffolding banners often measure well over a hundred square metres.

Where does Hyde Media have advertising spaces right now?

Our current spaces are in Basel, on Riehenring near Messe Basel. Riehenring 141 offers 175 m² of scaffolding space at a traffic-light junction with 39'851 contacts per day, and Riehenring 70 offers 125 m² at a junction with a tram line. Each site’s page shows its period and whether it is booked. New scaffolding sites appear when renovations start. All spaces are listed under locations, and more on Basel is under scaffolding advertising in Basel.

What is the difference between scaffolding and facade advertising?

Scaffolding advertising hangs on scaffolding and is tied to the length of the building works, while facade advertising hangs directly on a building wall and suits longer, more predictable runs. Scaffolding offers very large spaces in places where advertising normally cannot go, and suits launches and promotions. A facade builds awareness through repetition. For both formats the minimum booking is 4 weeks. Read more in scaffolding or facade.

Can I rent out my scaffolding or facade as advertising space?

Yes. Hyde Media rents facade and scaffolding space from property owners and handles advertisers, installation and the permit application. The lease is set out in a separate agreement with the owner. Towards advertisers, Hyde Media reserves the right to reject advertising that breaches the owner’s requirements or could harm the owner’s reputation. Read more for property owners.

Permits

Does scaffolding advertising need a permit?

Generally, yes. Under the Swiss Road Signs Ordinance (SSV), roadside advertising in principle needs a permit from the authority responsible under cantonal law, and cantons and municipalities have their own rules, for example on the townscape. You do not have to deal with it yourself: Hyde Media obtains the advertising permit from the responsible authority and the consent of the property owner. The permit must be in place before the banner goes up. Read more in permits for scaffolding advertising in Switzerland.

Who grants advertising permits in Basel?

In Basel-Stadt, advertising is handled through the building permit procedure, and applications go to the Building and Hospitality Inspectorate (Bau- und Gastgewerbeinspektorat, BGI). Within the city, the design is assessed by the Townscape Commission (Stadtbildkommission) against the canton’s advertising concept; in Riehen and Bettingen by their local commissions. More restraint is expected in historic districts than elsewhere. For Riehenring 141 the city has already granted the permit. Hyde Media submits the application for you.

What advertising content is not allowed?

It depends on the site’s permit. At Riehenring 141 in Basel, for example, alcohol advertising, political advertising and pornographic content are excluded. Hyde Media tells you about the conditions it knows of. If a creative does not meet them, you can supply a new one within the agreed deadlines. Whatever the site, you are responsible for making sure the advertising complies with the law, such as the Swiss Unfair Competition Act (UWG), and that you hold the rights to the texts, images and trademarks.

What happens if the permit is not granted?

Hyde Media then offers you an equivalent site or period. This applies when a required permit is refused, withdrawn or changed for reasons outside Hyde Media’s responsibility. If you do not accept the offer, we refund the amount paid for the part of the campaign that cannot take place. There is no further liability. This is set out in section 8.3 of the terms.

Duration & cancellation

What is the minimum campaign length?

The minimum booking is 4 weeks, for both scaffolding and facade advertising. A scaffolding banner can stay up for as long as the scaffolding stands. The available period is shown for each site, often in calendar weeks (CW), for example CW 44–47. Facades are not tied to building works and suit longer runs. The exact period is agreed in the quote. The campaign calculator shows how many contacts a period delivers.

How far ahead should I book a campaign?

As early as possible, because good scaffolding sites are often taken early. The lead time depends mainly on whether the site is free in the period you want, whether it already has a permit, and whether your creative is ready. Print files are due no later than 10 working days before the start. With a fixed date such as a trade fair, count back from that date and build in a buffer. See from booking to banner.

Can I move a booked campaign to another period?

Yes, once, and no later than 8 weeks before the agreed campaign start. The site must be free in the period you want. Costs already incurred or committed are invoiced. Request the move in writing; it takes effect when Hyde Media receives your notice. Otherwise a confirmed order is binding. The rules are in section 5 of the terms.

What does it cost to cancel a campaign?

It depends on how long before the start you cancel: more than 12 weeks before the campaign starts, 20% of the media price is charged; 6 to 12 weeks before, 50%; and less than 6 weeks before, 100%. Costs already incurred or committed for production and permits are added. Cancel in writing; it takes effect when Hyde Media receives your notice. Instead of cancelling, you can move the campaign once, up to 8 weeks before the start. Details in the terms.

What happens if the scaffolding comes down early?

The campaign then moves or becomes shorter accordingly, and Hyde Media offers you another period or site. Scaffolding sites are tied to building projects, and their availability depends on the building schedule. If the works are postponed or shortened, the period changes too. We let you know as soon as possible. If you do not accept the offer of another period or site, the price is reduced pro rata for the part not delivered.

Results & measurement

How many people see a scaffolding banner?

The daily contacts we give for each site tell you: on Riehenring in Basel the figure is 39'851. Over the minimum booking of 4 weeks that comes to 39'851 × 7 × 4 = 1'115'828 contacts. A contact is one opportunity to see the ad; someone passing five times counts five times. Reach, by contrast, counts each person once. Try other periods in the campaign calculator, and see the method in calculating outdoor reach.

How do you measure the success of an outdoor campaign?

With surveys before and after the campaign, searches for your brand, and website visits from the region during the campaign. Contacts show how many people could see the campaign, not whether it worked. So set a goal and a baseline for comparison before the start. Where people stop, such as at traffic lights, a QR code or a promo code can help. Read more in how to measure an OOH campaign.

What is CPM (cost per thousand)?

CPM is the price of 1,000 contacts: the campaign cost divided by the contacts, times 1,000. It lets you compare sites and media with different prices and reach on the same basis, for example a scaffolding space against a poster network or an online campaign. But a contact is not worth the same in every medium: a large banner you wait in front of at the lights works differently from an ad that flashes past in a feed. More terms in the OOH glossary.
