Basel is a particularly interesting city for scaffolding advertising. It is compact, the tram network is dense, Messe Basel regularly brings in an international audience, and many buildings are being renovated. Whether a campaign works, though, depends mainly on two questions: who do you want to reach, and how do those people move?

Here is a practical guide to choosing site and format.

Start with movement, not with the surface

The most common mistake is to start with the surface. Ask first how your audience passes the site.

Drivers see the surface from a distance and on the move. They have a few seconds. The message must be short and large. At traffic lights, the viewing time gets longer.

Tram passengers move more slowly and often sit looking out. At stops, people wait and have time to look.

Cyclists are close to the buildings, look ahead and move briskly. They see large banners well but have little time for text.

Pedestrians are the slowest and see the surface up close. Here the message can carry a bit more.

The strongest sites in Basel are where several of these groups come together, such as at traffic-light junctions with a tram line.

What makes a good scaffolding site

Contacts per day

The most important figure is the number of contacts per day. At Riehenring 141 it is 39'851 contacts per day. Scale the contacts up to the campaign period to compare sites. Our article on calculating the reach of an outdoor campaign shows how.

Visibility from several directions

Corner buildings at junctions are especially valuable because they are seen from several directions. A campaign can cover two street faces there, as Grand Casino Basel does at Riehenring 141 and EVO Fitness did at Burgfelderstrasse.

Dwell time

Traffic lights, stops and slow traffic extend the time people look at the surface. A site with somewhat less traffic but long dwell time can be more effective than one on a fast road.

Surroundings and audience

Does the site fit your audience? Around the Messe you reach trade visitors and commuters, in the neighbourhoods the local population, in the city centre people out shopping.

The key areas in Basel

Messe Basel and Riehenring. Traffic converges on the route from the motorway to Messe Basel and the Congress Center. This is where our sites Riehenring 141, with 175 m² right next to the Messe, and Riehenring 70, with 125 m² on the way to the Messe, the Congress Center and the Musical Theater Basel, are located. Riehenring 70 is booked for calendar weeks 44–47 of 2026.

Tram junctions in the neighbourhoods. Major junctions where trams stop and cars wait at the lights reach commuters and residents alike. One example is the campaign by EVO Fitness at Burgfelderstrasse 1.

City centre. Lots of foot traffic, but a sensitive, historic townscape. Large-format advertising is particularly demanding here in terms of design and permits.

Choosing the format

Size

Larger surfaces stand out more and are visible from further away. What matters, though, is whether your audience can see the surface well. A medium-sized surface at traffic lights can achieve more than a huge one that is only visible at an angle from a moving car.

One side or two

On corner buildings you can cover both street faces, either with the same visual to strengthen recognition, or with two coordinated visuals.

Scaffolding or facade

Scaffolding advertising suits campaigns that need high attention in a specific period. For a longer presence, facade advertising is the alternative. See our comparison Scaffolding vs. facade.

Campaign length

The minimum booking at Hyde Media is four weeks. Longer periods increase repetition and therefore recall.

Use Basel's calendar

Trade fairs and congresses, the autumn fair, the Advent season and Fasnacht change traffic flows and audiences in the city. If you want to reach fair visitors, plan your campaign around the fair dates. For the Christmas season, early planning pays off; see Black Week and Christmas.

Checklist before booking

  • Who should see the ad, and how does that audience pass by?
  • How many contacts per day does the site offer?
  • Is the surface visible from several directions?
  • Does the period fit your campaign?
  • Does your visual fit the conditions of the permit?
  • Can the message be read in the time available?
